Prescription for Life

It isn’t really news that exercise is a cornerstone of good health and long life. However, a study published in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) last October offers further compelling support of the importance of exercise. Reported in the New York Times by Gretchen Reynolds, the study employed meta-analysis of 305 past studies to compare the effectiveness of drug therapies versus exercise in reducing mortality rates. Four conditions were included: heart disease, chronic heart disease, stroke, or diabetes.

Exercise was shown as effective as drugs, including ubiquitous statins. And get this, when it comes to strokes, exercise proved more effective than drugs.

Of course, if you prefer unpleasant side effects, you should stick with prescription drugs. Otherwise, get moving!
