Everyone should use ibuprofen with caution–it is not kind to your intestines. Gretchen Reynolds of the New York Times reports that a new study shows athletes should be especially judicious in their Advil use since it increases intestinal damage and, potentially, intestinal leakage into the bloodstream. Ugh!
But I find this quote from Reynolds’ post particularly interesting:
Animal studies have also shown that ibuprofen hampers the ability of muscles to rebuild themselves after exercise. So why do so many athletes continue enthusiastically to swallow large and frequent doses of ibuprofen and related anti-inflammatory painkillers, including aspirin, before and during exercise?
Because they don’t know any better. Spread the word.
